In this whole summer, I gain knowledge from the subject Literary Criticism. In two months of my summer in this subject, I find it difficult because it needs my whole focus in doing the occasional paper. In Literary criticism, we discussed and tackled different approaches and taught me to budget my time or to manage my time specially in doing the occasional paper because we only have a very limited time to analyze and understand. Reading a poem, short story, novel, play were the task given to us. Giving our own analyses on the given topics or giving our impression right away is really hard to do. I have learned a lot in some approaches but some approaches are hard to comprehend. Two of the approaches that I really like are the Mythological and Psychological approach. I can truly say that I learned from this subject because I understand what the Id, Ego, and Super Ego are. I can even identify which from the Psychic zone I am using when I am thinking, and doing something. The approach that I did not like is the Feminist and Formalistic approach.  The Formalistic approach is hard to understand or analyze and the Feminist approach is difficult for me because only woman could analyze the said approach easily. If the man will analyze the feminist approach, it takes a long time before he can analyze the story.

All the approaches and occasional paper we did for the whole summer were quite exciting and we had enjoyed learning those approaches. Every time we discuss the approach, we have to do the occasional paper right away. If we do not able to finish the O.P, it shows that we are lazy doing the O.P.

To my professor, Zennia Zamora, I am thankful because she understands us and joined with us in our food trip every time we watch movies. She always reminds us “Hoy, magpasa kayo ng O.P. ninyo”, but we sometimes ignored it and most of the time we pass our O.P late. We always hear from her “Ang tamad tamad nyo talaga” with a smiling face. I have learned so much from Prof. Zamora especially about “BUHAY PAG-IBIG”. She taught us how to analyze a story, poems, play and so forth using different approaches.

One of her advices is not to be lazy in doing the O.P and try to pass it on time. She also wanted us to study hard .

An Analysis of the poem “In the Dark Depths” by Jose Maria Sison

Using Marxist Approach

In the poem “in the dark depths” the writer Jose maria Sison emphasize his experience through in the jail and I observe that poem is related in his life. If you scrutinize the poem you must read the bibliography of the author and you recognize why he wrote the poem. In Jose Maria Sison circumstances in his life is you understand the word within the poem.

In the poem, in first line “the enemy wants to bury us in the dark depths of prison” it’s had a meaning to us! While I analyze this line its means to me that when the author was accusing some cases and being jailed some politicians was investigating him and the trial to him will not held in his country but in the Netherlands base in what I read in his bibliography. Some people get bury him until he talk that he is the suspect in killing three men. In myself understanding in this line when the author imprisoned he experience a tortured of the police to admit him he was the suspect.

In the next line of poem “but shining gold is mine from the dark depths of the earth” I think the truth will come out and he is not the suspect from killed. And I think the only answered on his problem is god and faith to him. When he condemning in the crime and he always said the truth behind of the crime. “And the radiant pearl is dived from the dark depths of the sea” I think it is the same in the second line. The truth will shine and the person who accusing him was regretful on what he did in to him. “We suffer but we endure and draw up gold and pearl” the writer had a means in this line. In the day when he arrest and the trial is ongoing and every people believe that he was the suspect he always wanted to them that he is not the suspect. In every trail comes to us lets us looking in the positive ways to happen what is right.

“from depths of character, formed so long in struggle” in every person that you met it will have a differences character like in what happen to Jose Maria Sison in that time he arrested no human rights that will do to him. And he was maltreating of the other person. And I understanding in every people we met, we don’t give a so much trust to them because we did not know if this people are kind and will lean our secret to them.

In the summing up of this poem I think Jose Maria Sison was arrest and no human rights in arresting him. And I think he was maltreating of other people. And I recognize he wrote the poem inside the jail. And he expressed the feeling and emotion on he what experienced in the jail and the trial of his case. Although he had a message into this poem to the people just involve in the crime that they never do. I think like the sayings “don’t judge the book, by its cover” meaning Jose Maria Sison was judging of some people even they will not know what the truth behind of that is.

In the title “in the dark depths” I think it is a place that had a lot of problems like dungeon. And I think it is our weaknesses in life that we not give the solution from it. And although when were in the dark place that lots of problem we encounter the some people who gets our self to we fall into weakness. But we do our rights to lift up in the problem that we encounter. Like Ninoy saying “people worth dying for” if we compared this line in the poem of Jose Maria Sison its having the same its focus into the problem within government and the people. And we thankful that lord lead our way in the right ways.

An Analysis of Five Fables Using Structuralism Approach

The Binary Opposition’s in the First Fables “The young thief and his mother”, first “child and mother”, where the mother is the relationship of one family or sometime it’s a teacher in our school and that we called as second mother of us. In child is generally a human between the stages of birth and puberty. And the next binary is “young and old” its show of sign of aged and also “good and bad” the binary but this two is morally right behavior of one person. “The Old man and Death” the binary of this is “life and death” it’s a particular type or aspect of existence and also as the end of something. The next binary is “god and devil” its two is superhuman being or spirit and also the devil is a mischievous person. The third fables “The fox and the cat” the binary of this are “friend and enemy” it’s a supporter of a cause or organization and also the one is a person or group opposed or hostile to another. “Brave and humble” it’s a formal self confident or hostile behavior. “Small and tall” it’s a measurement from they head to foot or from base to top. “The tortoise and the birds” its binary opposition is “high and low” its specified height of some things. And “sky and land” it’s a creation of our god. ‘Walk and fly”, “swim and jump” it is the ability of the two animals that they can do in themselves. The last fables is “The woodman and the serpent” but the binary is “success and failure” when the woodman is not success in his done to the serpent but in the serpent is both success and failure because the serpent is alive and awakened but he will cut in two of the woodman before he will sting the child to death. “good and bad” its attitude of one character because the woodman is good I his doing to save a life of the serpent but the serpent is bad because the woodman is trying to save his life but when he awakened and ready to sting the child.

The Thematic structure it is the moral lesson of the fables that we know. In the first fables “the young thief and his mother” the moral lesson is intend to the reader is “train up the child in the way he should go; and when he is old he will not depart therefore”. Means in every what you kind to train the child they will adapt it and its better train the child in a good way. The second fables “The old man and death”. “We would often be sorry if our wishes were gratified” means in this lesson must be accepted what is our failure and forgiveness it’s the answer to gratified our wishes. The third fables “the fox and the cat”. “Better one safe way than a hundred on which you cannot reckon” means better go to a safe way that you think it’s a good for you than to a wrong way that bring you a dangerous. The fourth fables “The tortoise and the bird” the moral lesson is “never soaring aloft on an enemy’s opinions” means don’t believe in other person opinion that brings you a dangerous in your life. And be less talk, less mistake. And the last fables “The woodman and the serpent” the moral lesson is “no gratitude from the wicked”, means to be once the person trusting to you! You must be able to give them a appreciation.

The linear structure of the fables is enough for me because some fables the character is the animal but sometimes within man and animals. In every role of the character in fables they give their role as best and showing an emotion through their conversations. And in every fable they have a problem to need a solving strategy and sometimes it wills they failure in the problem that they need to fix it in easily way of they planned. In man role they give a so much effort to give a better success of their fables. In the animals the mind of the writer is the one use of the character of animals and did not emphasize the role of the some animals.

The theological sequences in every fables is two its maybe success or failure. The first fables is “the young thief and his mother” the young is do a thief ad in every he gets he brings this in his mother but he will be caught in the way he thief he accused and be executed. So he wills failure in their doing. The second fables “the woodman and the serpent” the woodmen bring the serpent in their home and put it in the front of fire place and when the serpent awakened they spanks ready to sting the child but the woodman get his axe and cut the serpent in two. So the woodman failed in that time but he success when he killed the serpent. In the “fox and the cat” when the cat had interaction a conversation in the fox because the fox he want escaping its enemies so while they had conversation the cat heard the cry of packs of hounds coming towards them then cat scampered up a tree to hid herself in boughs but the fox still stay in his place while the huntsmen and his hounds was caught him and he will killed by the huntsmen. So that the cat was success of her doing hid in the boughs but the fox was failure. “The Oldman and death”. When old man he cannot bear his life longer and he wish that death the only taking him. When the death hear his wishes the death is come and talk to odman that he heard thee call from him but the oldman said would you kindly help him to lift the faggot of stick in his shoulder. In that case the oldman are failed in his wishes because he did not swear his wishes to the death because the oldman wants to dead. “the tortoise and the birds” the tortoise he asked to eagle to carry him in his new home but the eagle agreed and seizing his shell because the tortoise promising to the eagle a rich reward but in their way they met a crow and said the tortoise is good eating but the eagle say the shell is to hard and the crow said the rocks will soon crack the shell so the eagle taking the hint and let fall the tortoise and made a meal for the two birds. So the tortoise is failed in his wishes to carry him of the eagle in his new home.

The objective of all fables I’ve been read is wants a success but in their wants it’s become failure to them. If we related this fables in reality life the people had more wishes and they want to happen it but if we don’t do our right owns in our wishes becomes failed to us. But must we do in every failure it have a learning that leads to us to stay the foot on the grounds and be humble and think twice in the person that we did not believe to them and we did not really know them.

-REACTION PAPER

A Pleasantville is an old fashion movie but had sense to watch and to understand. According in my analysis on that film some viewer may get tired and bored of watching the film maybe because of some religious aspects, they happen not to understand the film. At first, I felt bored with the color but then as the story goes, it was a bit funny and I appreciate the lesson the are trying to inject to the viewers. Pleasantville seems to be a nonsense movie if not deeper understand. I must see to it that I really understand what the message conveys. Pleasantville is like a cartoon, it’s a bit entertaining.

In Pleasantville I’ve seen a lot of symbolism that we’ve tackled during our discussion, especially the colors. The first symbol was the moon, which represents the lovers in the lover’s lane. Then the red apple which symbolizes the sin and evilness, just like Eve in her sin to Adam. There Bud eats the apple that the woman (I cannot remember the name) asks him. I appreciate the film so much, it’s nice and I love some scenes there, and that was indeed the reality isn’t it? Pleasantville said that “Don’t judge the book by it’s cover” it’s a lesson that tells that we should not judge the movie first, just because it’s black and white it was boring, the meaning and the sense of the film is the essence. Another is “sex” which symbolizes a negative aspect of the people in Pleasantville; sex is Mary Sue’s past time, there they started to change. And the sounds like “ahh.. ahh… ahh.” In myself I understand it as a sound of hallucination of man and women making sex. I focused on sexual images there (not really).
